As contemporary mainstream fictions increasingly strive for sequels, series and spin-offs, narrative arcs are becoming subordinate in the storytelling process to individual arcs of well-defined and drawn characters. Basically, everything is tending towards the soap opera style of narrative. Entertainment Weekly unwittingly highlighted this trend with their 20th anniversary listicle of the 100 Greatest Characters of the last 20 Years, which begins with Homer from The Simpsons and closes with some seriously boring folks (Friday Night Lights? who even watches that shit?), but somehow managed to exclude any characters from Star Trek, Babe the pig, or, most egregiously, Special Agent Dale Cooper from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
